I was originally planning on having two EVGA GF 9800GX2 1GB DDR3 PCIE Knock Out 650/2.05 HDMI graphics cards, but with the cost already quite high, I'll leave that as a future upgrade.

Hard drives will be setup in raid 1 (mirroring)

Raptor's = C Drive - OS, applications, and games

Barracuda's = D Drive - file storage

ooh what kind of base did you get for it, I hope it has a temperature gauge in it. Also are you going to get liquid cooling or are you going to depend on the fans?

Apart from being a lot more expensive, the i7 isn't a major leap forward from the core 2, essentially all it would give me is bragging rights. It's best to wait for the next intel chip to be released.

@ honest joe - when you say base, do you mean case? In which case it's listed there, first thing on the list. No temp gauges, but has controls for the fans (though they are located inside the case). Going with fan cooling for now, may upgrade it to water cooling at some stage in the future.

the base model i7 is almost as fast as a core 2 extreme. it IS a major leap forward from the Core 2 :P

its a quad core with hyperthreading, so in theory its an octo core

XP most likely, at least until Windows 7 or maybe even Windows 8 comes out.

XP makes sense for me as most of my applications will run under XP but not Vista. (plus I don't like Vista, it's too much of a hog.)

Are you going to have an OS on your slave drive, like Ubuntu or something (I have linux on mine).

Haven't really thought about it, thing is with linux I don't really know what I'd use it for, plus it probably wouldn't support all the hardware in this new system.
