  1. In preparation for my work (building the installer), I reinstalled Vice City yesterday evening.  It must have been years since I last played the mod - even firing up 0.2e, I actually found it fun to play.

I guess spending some time away from it has given me a little renewed enthusiasm for it.  That and viewing it on a 40" display.

Now to build the installer for 0.2f!

  2. It is still considered a beta because it's unfinished.  It is being released as is, with no further work planned to complete it.

The whole 'total conversion' concept was always a very grand plan.  Unfortunately without a dedicated team of people working full time on the mod, it was something which in reality was never going to happen.

  3. Hi, you are largely correct for the most part.

0.2f will be the last release from us - and to clarify the F does not mean final, it will be a playable beta as per previous releases of the mod.

It will include the things you have seen in the previous trailers, i.e. a completed version of the 1955 town square (clocktowers will change between 1885, 1955, 1985, and 2015, but the surrounding buildings will remain the same).  There also some additional areas which have been modelled by Thyncho88, as well as a player model or two which will also be included.

The Rogers locomotive from part III will be included, complete with animations.  Likewise Doc's truck will also have an animated tailgate.  There is also the keypad entry for the time circuits.

There are some WIP animations for the 2015 taxi which may or may not make it into the release.

And of course, there will be Carlos' fanastic new DeLorean models.

I'm sure I am missing things but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

What happens after the release?  That is a very good question, and one I am not sure has an answer at the moment.

Certainly I think we all agree that continuing to mod Vice City does not make sense.  This is a game which was released over 12 years ago, and is becoming increasingly difficult to make function (even without mod's) in newer versions of Windows.

Moving to San Andreas is a possiblity, however even SA is now 10 years old.

What problably makes the most sense (in my opinion), is to jump to GTA 4, I would imagine most folks will now have hardware which can handle GTA 4.

I am hopeful to have a little surprise lined up for October 21st - will need to see if it can fall into place within the timescale we are working on.

Certainly for any future releases I am of the opinion that rather than a full release, new features and models should be made available to users as they are completed, and a small update file released to incorporate those new features/models into your existing game.  This would help keep folks interested in the mod for one thing.  To be quite honest I am somewhat ashamed that it has taken us 7 years to release 0.2f.

Also you may have seen from the facebook page that I am stepping down.  That may have been somewhat overstated.  My role here, other than hosting the website, was making the trailers, and writing the install script (in conjunction with Mini-Me).  I will still be around to do the latter if required - but what little spare time I do have these days is spent within the DeLorean community (for those who don't know, I bought a DeLorean 5 years ago).  So while life has moved on for me, I do of course still look back on this mod with fond memories, the team are a great bunch of people to work with, and we could not ask for a better, more supportive fan base.

That is why I am hopeful that the mod will continue in some form - now it maybe that a new generation of modders take over where we leave things.  We will make all endeavours to make the code base open source to allow folks to continue our work, all we would ask is that any future releases make sure to credit the appropriate folks.

I'll close things here as I don't want to send people to sleep, but am happy to answer any further questions.

    Thanks, Mike

  4. That was just one example, I personally know two folks here in the UK who have purchased parts from him, and have not been impressed by the finished result. Just be careful and do your due-diligence before you make your final decision on who to send the car to for conversion. The best bet would be Temporal FX they have a proven track record of providing exceptionally high quality results.

Of course, you may end up the same as me, and once you have the car, decide you can't possibly start defacing a very rare and unique classic car by drilling holes in it to mount bttf parts.

  5. I don't know anyone who has purchased a TM conversion from bob's prop shop who has actually been happy with the results. Have a good read of this thread after one of his customers decided to speak out: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?9760-Videobob-s-Time-Machine-16-For-Adam-Kontras-in-Hollywood

So I have finally decided to start saving for a DeLorean, maybe I can do some minor upgrades to make it not suck as much

They are as reliable as any other 33 year old classic car, things can and will break on them, so be prepared. Take your time and work through upgrading the known/common fault areas on the car before you think about bolting extra 'crap' to the back of it.

  6. The do look very nice, but the originals are easily fixable. Also since the new ones are fibreglass, there is zero flex in them, so changing a bulb on the headlights would effectively be a fascia off job. Where as on the original you can push the side/top in enough to get to the screws that hold the headlights in place.

The 'eyebrows' on the original fascia's can be removed by heating the affected area up with a heat gun and strategically placing a block of wood and some clamps. Rinse and repeat until the eyebrow has gone. To stop them warping again, you bond some strips of ally bar to the under side.

Plus I like to keep things original where I can, it maintains the originality of the car :)

  7. It will be nice to get the interior pieces down to the trimmer, I don't think there is much chance of seeing that back until January at the earliest. But that's ok, it gives me a break until the fascias come back from being painted, then I can start putting the exterior back together, fitting the refurbished brake calipers, new brake lines and pads.

Slightly ambitious but I am aiming to have it on the road for a club meet in March.

  8. Here are a few more pics, the interior is now completely gutted and ready to be taken down to the upholsterers for re-trimming.

And I must stop looking at DeLorean's, I need to finish this one first, but this eBay car is very tempting, and matches my requirements of grey interior, manual transmission, and grooved hood! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ebaymotors/1981-DeLorean-Very-Good-Condition-Low-Miles-/251731207290?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&forcev4exp=true#ht_500wt_899

  9. The topic was created by, you guessed it, Mike! B) You might want to ask him about it.

Wow, a blast from the past, the install script has been rewritten at least twice since that post was made.

Wow, this is fantastic news! Do you have a thread on a DMC forum for this project? I would be very interested in keeping up with your progress. :)

I can also relate to not having the time for gaming. Times have certainly changed.

Regardless, I hope you are doing well overall. Best to you and the Mrs.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, your project almost sounds like Project Vixen, in some ways. Have you considered giving your project a name?

I have posted up a small selection of pictures on Facebook, but I am holding off on posting them up on the DMC forums until the project is nearing completion.

I haven't really given the project a name, in comparison to the vixen project, my project is easy, the car was fully assembled to begin with, I have just been slowly making it look worse each time I work on it. Unfortunately the interior was pretty trashed so it has all had to come out so that it can be retrimmed. It will certainly keep me busy for a few months, I estimate it will be back on the road for March all being well.

  10. Good to hear from you, Mike!

The restoration project looks great, do keep us posted!

Unfortunately, I don't really frequent this forum too much anymore. I'm mostly on the LCPDFR forum, doing GTA IV related work.

Hopefully version 0.2f is able to come around soon. Any progress is good progress. :heh:

The car is in many many parts now, I have stripped of pretty much everything I can. All of the interior has been removed sans the steering wheel, and that will be coming off as soon as I get hold of a steering wheel puller, then the entire interior will be going to a specialist to retrim it. Front and rear fascias are off, as is the louvre and engine cover, and have been sent off for painting. The wheels were being refurbished and having fresh tyres installed, but those came back yesterday. Brake calipers are currently being replated and refurbished. I think that's about it for now, still lot's to do, but not much more I can do at the moment until the interior and fascias are done.

I don't have time for games anymore unfortunately, it's one of the reasons I haven't been on here to update progress, I just have not had the time. The little free time I do have is either spent with the mrs, or working on this new car.

Mini-Me has found a way to fix the glitch with the mouse not working on newer versions of windows, I count that as good progress as it was annoying as hell.

  11. What's new everyone? It has been a while since I checked in on here.

Mod wise I simple have not had any time to check in on it lately, I have been extremely busy with real life, and have recently imported a second DeLorean to work on over the winter, which is taking up what little free time I do have. Over the past few weeks, I have been turning the car into an ever increasing number of parts. For those who are interested, I am uploading an ongoing collection of photos to document the restoration on dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mnkxjz3mxj34yte/AABeIKb97pv9_wJBleUZehZna?dl=0

In terms of updates on the mod, I believe the town square is now finished pending packaging, however coding still needs to be done, bluespace had advised he was going to update the script for us, I will need to check in with him to see how/if that is progressing. If it is not, then we may release the mod 'as-is', it has been waiting way too long and I think we need to get 0.2f released and draw a line under it.

  12. A few of us have suffered PC issues, in my case my main PC has died which has delayed the trailer I said I was going to make towards the latter part of last year, I could make it on my backup PC however there would be so much lag on the video that it really wouldn't look very good.

I know DK's PC is also down at the moment and we are waiting on him fixing that to get the last few models for the town square put into the game.

Outside of that, I'm not a college student anymore, I have work and commitments I need to attend to, along with wanting to spend time working on my DeLorean, I don't have the time to check back here too often. Having said that, as soon as there are updates to be made to the install files for 0.2f I will endevour to update it asap.

The mod is far from lost, we have multiple backups of all the files across multiple different PC's/external hard drives and in the cloud.

If people are that bothered about 0.2f, lookup the version from 2009 that Mr Fusion aka the b*****d leaked out. Just don't ask us for any kind of support on it.

  13. Are these any good to you? Recorded today with a proper microphone.

Engine idle with microphone placed just above the rear louver:

Engine idle with microphone placed down between the exhaust tips (slight noise at the start as I moved the microphone into position - I would chop off the first 5 seconds):
